Standardized Exams

The SAT, ACT, and PSAT

Our SAT and ACT prep work combines widely available review books from large companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review, and lesser known ones like The Math Panda, to review key concepts and provide lower stakes practice problems and practice exams. When it comes to doing practice tests under exam-day conditions, we use practice tests from the College Board, to ensure students have a clear sense of what the exam will actually look like when the big day comes.

We also use our web app, and a number of formula sheets, worksheets, study guides, and other materials made in-house to fill in gaps, emphasize techniques not commonly found in other companies’ review materials, and provide students extra practice.

The SSAT and ISEE

The content of the SSAT and ISEE varies by age. We tailor our approaches significantly depending the age of our students. Though we rely on a number of widely available SSAT and ISEE books, these materials are more limited than they are for the SAT and ACT. As a result, we use a variety of study aids designed to improve the foundational skills that lead to success on these exams.

Students do practice problems, take practice exams, and review study guides to help them better understand the test, but they also do independent reading, and grammar and vocabulary work to help them on the verbal elements of the exam.

AP Exams

When studying for AP Exams, it is critical that students synthesize the work they do in school with the work they do for their end of year exams. AP curricula often diverge from the contents of the AP exam itself—the school year is long, and these courses sometimes delve into greater detail than the exams themselves.

We utilize a number of commonly available review books to ensure students have reliable practice exams, and know what to expect from the AP exam itself. That said, AP review books are not comprehensive materials. They impart knowledge about the exam, and provide useful review. It is critical that students supplement this by working through the material covered in their courses. At TSNY, we make a variety of study aids to help students turn their coursework into useful prep materials for their AP Exams.

Subject Tutoring

Subject tutoring requires flexibility, and an emphasis on the materials students encounter in their coursework. Below, you can read more about how we supplement the materials students use in school, and check out samples of some of our handouts.

Math and Science

We always work with materials students use in their courses, so that they learn concepts and methods the way their teachers want them to. We supplement these materials with study aids and approaches that help students engage with their schoolwork in new ways. We use a range of techniques emphasizing mnemonics, memorization games, outlining, mind-mapping and more according to age, learning style, and need. Though many of our tutors have received PhDs in math and science, they rely on strong communication skills and effective pedagogy rather than brute expertise, so that students learn material in ways that make sense to them.

History and Social STudies

There are only so many techniques one can use to do algebra. History and social studies, however, vary drastically from course to course and school to school. We start with the materials students use in their courses, and select supplemental materials that complement them. Social studies and history assignments vary from the creative, to the literary, to the quanitative. We help students synthesize the various disciplines that fall within these labels. Whether they need help with research, need grammar support, or need test-taking techniques for their big exam, we have the materials that will help them build sustainable success.

Literature and Writing

TSNY offers a wide array of study aids explaining grammar rules, literary concepts, methods of literary analysis, and more. Whether students are just learning how to write paragraphs, or analyzing Shakespeare in their high school English course, we know how to help. Beyond our guides to outlining and essay writing, we also have numerous reading lists and writing exercises that help students find their passion for reading and writing.

Foreign Language

To supplement the materials students use in their coursework, we draw from a wide variety of reading materials, writing prompts, and grammar handouts to help students go beyond memorizing vocabulary words. Whether students need supplemental French reading, a handout to help with their Catullus translations, or a conversation partner to practice Spanish with, we have you covered.
