We start with the materials students receive and engage with in in their AP or AP-equivalent coursework. AP review books provide valuable overviews of subjects, but they do not go into the level of detail that textbooks, in-class notes, and exams offer. We begin with these materials, and supplement them with our ready-made materials, and review materials we find on the market. By working with material students find familiar, we help students move beyond the surface level of review books, allowing them to succeed in school and on their AP exams at the same time.
Some review books provide great overviews of subject material, but offer poor practice tests. For others, it is vice versa. At Tutoring Service of New York, we pour over every review book we can find to ensure students get the best of everything. We then supplement these materials with outlines of our own, study aids, and guides to approaching both AP Exams and AP coursework. Students learn how to effectively outline and summarize complex ideas, keep themselves organized, and understand their material in the context of both their AP Exams and their coursework.
Though we cover test-taking techniques in depth, our fundamental focus with any AP student is to help them learn the material at the root level. Unlike the SAT or ACT, AP exams often feature a lot more variance—questions differ from one another more significantly. As a result, it is very difficult to cram for AP Exams, or to rely too much on guesswork on exam day. We start working with students well ahead of their exams to help them plot a course of action, engage with material meaningfully, and develop frameworks that allow them to internalize concepts on their own terms.
For students enrolled in AP courses, the actual AP exam is a long ways away from the first day of school. Between September and May, there are countless tests to take, papers to write, and lessons to process. At Tutoring Service of New York, our support goes well beyond the actual AP Exams.
