Beyond Memorization

Whether studying American history, or ancient history, middle school social studies can sometimes feel like a marathon of memorizing facts and dates. We help students build deeper understandings of social studies materials, so they have frameworks process and internalize new information. Students retain knowledge for the long-term, and build skills that last them all the way through high school and college.

Writing Skills

While we help students develop their writing skills in the context of their social studies coursework, we also work on broader skills that can help them throughout their academic careers. Students work on analyzing DBQs and essay primary sources while developing their abilities to organize arguments, write concisely, and check for grammatical errors.

The Basics of Research

Our tutors help students walk through the basics of the research process, from formulating research questions, to navigating online databases and libraries, to scouring indices and making bibliographies. Students learn to organize their research processes and findings, and to think critically about the relationship between the materials they encounter, the questions and subjects their exploring, and their coursework.

Tailored Learning

Some students in social studies and history courses love to make flashcards, and memorize details. Some like to make detailed outlines of textbook chapters, and others prefer to make outlines of concepts. Social studies and history can incorporate story-telling, critical thinking, reading comprehension, and a host of other skills. We take the time to learn about students’ learning styles, so we can help them find the approaches that work best for them.
