A Systematic Approach
Trying to memorize phrases and intuit rules is only so useful. That’s why we help students understand grammar and internalize vocabulary at a deeper level, in ways that feel organic to them. Everyone has their own relationship to language. We help our students understand that relationship, so we can build habits and methods that work for them.
Materials From Life
In addition to academic materials, we use everything from magazine articles to podcasts to help students refine their language skills in contexts that interest them. Whether it’s building Twitter feeds to follow Spanish language soccer publications, or finding French YouTube channels, we try to help students engage with material in the real world, so they can do better in the classroom.
High Level Latin
Latin is unique as a foreign language, in that many schools have little oral or speech related components of Latin study. As a result, students are often asked to understand complicated grammatical constructions early in their Latin careers. Our team members work with students to master these concepts, and to identify repeatable patterns processes they can use in translation and composition.
Conversation Partners
Tutoring Service of New York maintains a broad network of conversation partners for students of all ranges, based in the United States, France, Spain, and Argentina. All of our partners are native or fluent speakers. By allowing students to talk about their interests in non-academic settings, our partners give students the space and guidance they need to take their listening and speaking skills to the next level.
